Singapore, What's Our Future in Architecture?

By Tan Szue Hann, Surbana Jurong

Happy 50th, Singapore!

Over the last 50 years since independence, Singapore’s architectural landscape has evolved from a canvas of nation building in the 1960s and 1970s, to identity seeking in the 1980s, to internationalisation in the 1990s, 2000s and beyond.

What would then define the architecture of the new era we are headed into? The nation has come of age, having gone through a difficult but successful early childhood and adolescence. What would define our architectural landscape of the next one, two decades? Or even the next 50 years?

This Conversation seeks to answer that, by taking stock of what is around us right now, and looking forward to what lies in store.

Hann is the Principal Architect & Deputy Head (Sustainable Urban Solutions) at Surbana Jurong, and a Council Member and Chair of the Institution Thrust, at Singapore Institute of Architects.

Szue Hann was recently awarded the Singapore's Young Green Architect of the Year award by BCA and SGBC in September 2015.
